Olender Ethnographic Park in Wielka Nieszawka

The Olender Ethnographic Park in Wielka Nieszawka (say "VYEL-kah nyeh-SHAHV-kah") is Poland's first open-air museum devoted to the Olęder, or "Dutch," settlers who drained and farmed the marshy Vistula valley. Spread over more than 5 hectares (12 acres) just below the river's flood embankment, about 10 km from Toruń, it recreates a village from around 1900 with thatched timber farmsteads, a granary, wells and woven willow fences. It is a branch of the Ethnographic Museum in Toruń and an easy half-day trip from the city.

Where it is and how to get there

Toruń, whose Gothic old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, lies roughly 190 km (120 miles) south of Gdańsk by road and about 210 km northwest of Warsaw; Bydgoszcz Airport is the nearest airport. From Toruń the park is about a 15-minute drive, with free parking on site. Without a car, take suburban bus line 151 run by Toruń's city transport company (MZK) to Wielka Nieszawka, or cycle the flat riverside route. In season, boat trips also run along the Vistula from Toruń.

Who were the Olęder?

The first of them were Mennonites from the Netherlands and Frisia who fled religious persecution and settled in the Vistula delta in the mid-16th century. Experts in water management, they were invited to tame flood-prone land on favorable terms; later the name covered German Lutherans and Polish Catholics with the same privileges too. Wielka Nieszawka remained an important Mennonite center until World War II, and its surviving cemetery is why the park was built here. It opened in May 2018.

What to see

• The arcaded house from Kaniczki (1757) — one of only three of its kind left in the region.
• The Niedźwiedź farmstead (1790s) — living quarters, cowshed and barn under one roof, raised on an artificial mound against floods.
• The Gutowo farmstead, home to the permanent exhibition on Olęder history, religion and culture, plus the ticket office and shop.
• A lapidarium of Mennonite and Lutheran gravestones, the oldest dated 1691.
• The Mennonite-Lutheran cemetery, used until 1944, where more than 150 graves have been marked after conservation work.

Opening hours and tickets

• October–April: Tuesday–Friday 9:00 am–4:00 pm, Saturday–Sunday 10:00 am–4:00 pm
• May–September: Tuesday and Thursday–Sunday 10:00 am–6:00 pm, Wednesday 9:00 am–4:00 pm
• Closed Mondays; last entry one hour before closing

Tickets cost PLN 20 (standard), PLN 14 (reduced) and PLN 40 (family). Entry is free on Wednesdays. Free audio guides in English and German are available at the shop, and an English-speaking guide costs PLN 80 per group (no guided tours on free Wednesdays). The park is also closed on Holy Saturday, Easter Sunday, November 1, December 24, 25 and 31, and New Year's Day.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, especially if you are interested in Dutch and Mennonite heritage in Central Europe or want a quiet countryside break after Toruń's busy old town. Allow about 1.5 hours, or 2 hours with a guide. The site is open and flat, so bring sun protection in summer and sturdy shoes in autumn.
