Wizna, Podlachia
The Defense of Wizna at Góra Strękowa (VEEZ-na; goo-RA stren-KO-va) is an open-air war memorial where, on September 7-10, 1939, Polish soldiers under Captain Władysław Raginis held the Narew River line against General Heinz Guderian's XIX Panzer Corps. You can see the ruins of the command bunker, a memorial plaque and graves. In Polish tradition the battle is called the "Polish Thermopylae", though historians debate how to judge it. Wizna lies in northeastern Poland, on the Narew.
The defense was part of Independent Operational Group "Narew" during the German invasion of Poland. The Polish "Wizna" sector had about 20 officers and between 340 and 700 other ranks, depending on the historian (one 2011 analysis says no more than about 360). The fortified line ran through Góra Strękowa and used reinforced-concrete bunkers: three heavy ones near Giełczyn and Kołodzieje, two on Góra Strękowa, and one each at Kurpiki and Maliszewo. The attacker had about 42,000 men and about 350 tanks.
German scouts took Wizna on September 7. On September 9, after about two hours of bombardment, infantry and tanks attacked and isolated the bunkers one by one. Góra Strękowa, the last stronghold, fell on September 10. Captain Raginis ordered his men out of the bunker and killed himself with a grenade. The defense delayed Guderian by about two days.
Plan 30-60 minutes. It is an open, grassy and uneven site with wide views over the fields and the Narew valley, so wheelchair users may find it difficult. Read about the battle beforehand. It suits military-history fans and school groups. Please be respectful: this is a burial place.
Some Polish historians question the "Polish Thermopylae" label. Tomasz Wesołowski of the University of Białystok argues that the Narew and the work on the pontoon bridge, rather than the defenders, stopped the Germans. His view has caused strong debate, so it is worth knowing both sides.
The site is open all year and free. There are no official hours or fees, and we found no information on parking.
Góra Strękowa is near Wizna, close to national road 64. A car is the easiest way, and public transport is limited. The currency is the Polish zloty (PLN).
