Tykocin Castle

Tykocin Castle (pronounced roughly "tih-KO-cheen") stands on the banks of the Narew River in northeastern Poland. It is a modern reconstruction, raised on the foundations of King Sigismund Augustus's 16th-century fortress, which once held the largest arsenal of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Today the red-brick walls and towers again rise above the river meadows, with a museum in the cellars, a grand tiled-stove hall and a lookout tower. Together with the town's famous Great Synagogue, it makes Tykocin one of the most rewarding small towns in the Podlasie region.

Where it is and how to get there

Tykocin lies about 30 km west of Białystok and roughly 170 km northeast of Warsaw. Białystok has fast trains from Warsaw; from there it is a short drive or a local bus ride. There is a parking lot right next to the castle. The address is 3 Puchalskiego Street.

History in brief

In 1433 the Lithuanian magnate Jan Gasztołd received Tykocin; his wooden fort burned around 1519, and after the family died out in 1542 the estate passed to the crown. Sigismund II Augustus built a brick Renaissance castle here in 1549–1575, designed by royal builder Hiob Bretfus, and an arsenal was completed in 1569 – under Stephen Báthory it reportedly held 500 cannons. After the king died in nearby Knyszyn in 1572, his embalmed body lay at the castle for more than a year before the funeral procession left for Kraków's Wawel in September 1573.

In November 1705, Augustus II the Strong met Tsar Peter the Great here, an event linked with the founding of the Order of the White Eagle, Poland's oldest decoration. The castle burned in 1734, was dismantled for building material around 1750 and finished off by a flood in 1771. Reconstruction began in 2002, led by a private investor and based on plans found in an archive in St. Petersburg; work on some towers and wings continues.

What to see

• The cellars, with an exhibition on the castle's history.
• The Glass Hall with a reconstruction of one of the largest tiled stoves of the old Commonwealth.
• The prison tower, the highest lookout in the area, with views over the Narew valley and the castle's resident storks.

Tickets and opening hours

As of October 2026, according to the castle's website:

• Open daily, 11 a.m.–5 p.m.; guided tours on the hour from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., lasting 40–50 minutes
• Tickets: 21 PLN adults, 19 PLN under-18s and seniors, free for children under 6
• Standard tours are in Polish; English-language guiding costs an extra 150–200 PLN and must be booked in advance (biuro@zamekwtykocinie.pl, +48 85 718 73 72)
• Tickets are sold only at the courtyard desk on the day; some hours may be reserved for groups

The castle also has a restaurant serving Old Polish and regional food, guest rooms and a spa.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, as part of a half-day in Tykocin. Allow about an hour for the castle, then cross the bridge to the Baroque market square and the Great Synagogue of 1642, now a museum. Nature lovers can continue to the Narew and Biebrza national parks.
