Nature Museum in Drozdowo

On the Narew river, on the edge of the Łomża Landscape Park of the Narew Valley, in the former Lutosławski manor, operates the Nature Museum in Drozdowo — an institution combining the nature of north-eastern Poland with memorabilia of the Łomża landed gentry.

The Lutosławski manor

The museum was founded in 1984 on the initiative of Andrzej Chyl; until 1995 it was a branch of the District Museum in Łomża and today it is a unit of the Łomża county. Its seat is the former manor of the Lutosławski family, from which the composer Witold Lutosławski — one of the most outstanding creators of the 20th century — descended. The collections also include memorabilia of Roman Dmowski, who spent the last months of his life in the manor.

From the Biebrza to five continents

The permanent exhibitions are devoted to the nature of the Łomża land: "Birds of the Biebrza Basin", "Mammals of the Biebrza Basin", "Vegetation of the Biebrza Basin", "Herbal Secrets. Medicinal Plants of the Narew Valley", "Hunting Trophies" and "The Moose — King of the Biebrza Marshes". The hit of the institution is "The Underwater World of Five Continents" — a set of 26 aquariums with fish from Asia, South America, Australia, Africa and Europe. Next door works the "Manor Salon" display, showing gentry interiors from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The museum also co-organises the summer Music Days of Drozdowo-Łomża festival.

Practicalities

The museum (38 Główna Street, Piątnica commune) is closed on Mondays; Tue–Fri 8.30–17.30, Saturdays 9.30–17.15, Sundays 9.30–15.30. A combined ticket with the Drozdowo Refuge costs regular PLN 9, reduced PLN 7; on Fridays the exhibitions are free. An educational path starts at the institution — it is worth extending your visit with a walk along the Narew.
