Hadyna and Pyzik Bench in Siewierz

In a corner of the Siewierz market square, in the shade of the fountain with the Siewierz Maidens, two gentlemen sit on a bronze bench — Stanisław Hadyna and Zdzisław Pyzik, creators of the song „Od Siewierza jechał wóz" („A Cart Was Leaving Siewierz"), thanks to which the whole of Poland came to know this small town on the Warta.

The authors of „Od Siewierza"

Hadyna, a composer, conductor and musicologist born in 1919 in Karpętna, founded the Song and Dance Ensemble „Śląsk" and directed it artistically for years. He composed, among others, „Karolinka", „Szła dzieweczka" and „Gdybym to ja miała" — and it was he who wrote the music for the Siewierz song. The words were penned by Zdzisław Pyzik, a poet and lyricist, president of the Katowice branch of the Polish Union of Choirs and Orchestras, writing for „Śląsk" and theatres in Katowice, Sosnowiec, Łódź and Tarnów. For years the song of the Siewierz cart was performed by the choir of the „Śląsk" Ensemble.

A monument from 2018

The bench was installed on the market square in 2018; the design and the plaster model were prepared by the Kraków sculptors Agnieszka and Marek Maślanka. Siewierz is a good base for trips across the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland: within a few dozen kilometres lie Ogrodzieniec Castle, Bobolice and the Błędów Desert, and the market square itself, with its atmospheric town houses, is worth a full circuit.
