St Barbara and St Valentine Church in Siewierz

St Barbara and St Valentine’s Church in Siewierz is a masonry hospital church built in 1618 through the efforts and funding of Siewierz burghers. It stands south of the Market Square, close to the ruins of the Kraków bishops’ castle, and is one of the most interesting monuments in the town’s historic centre.

A hospital church and a place of assemblies

The church was built on the site of a 16th-century wooden sanctuary. For centuries it served the sick and poor of the neighbouring hospital, documented from 1515. In the 17th and 18th centuries it also hosted sejmiki, assemblies of the nobility of the Duchy of Siewierz. The Brotherhood of Christ’s Passion and the Literary Confraternity operated here, while the independent hospital parish continued until 1840.

The Late-Renaissance altar

The semicircular apse holds a Late-Renaissance high altar from 1620–1640, decorated with strapwork ornament and figures of saints. At its centre is a painting of St Barbara and St Valentine dated 1639. Also note the 17th-century Baroque pulpit, the stone stoup and the side altars. The interior and high altar were restored in 1987–1995.

Practical information

The church is on Krakowska Street, a few minutes’ walk from the Market Square and Siewierz castle. It is an active church, but interior access is limited and may depend on services or special events. Check the town or parish information before visiting; local material says the church is sometimes opened exceptionally on 14 February, St Valentine’s Day.
