Władysławowo, Pomeranian
Rozewie Lighthouse (ro-ZEV-yeh) stands on Cape Rozewie, among old beech woods a few kilometers west of Władysławowo on Poland's Baltic coast, north of Gdańsk. There are actually two towers you can climb: Rozewie I, lit in 1822 and still working, with the longest nominal range of any light on the Polish coast (26 nautical miles), and Rozewie II from 1875, opened to visitors in 2022. A small lighthouse museum completes the site.
Navigation fires burned on this cape long ago; the oldest record is a Swedish map of 1696. The present lighthouse was first lit on 15 November 1822. In 1875 a second tower was added so ships would not confuse this light with neighboring ones; it went dark in 1910, when the older tower was electrified and topped with a steel extension. Growing beech trees later blocked the beam again, so in 1978 Rozewie I was raised by another 8 m. It now stands 32.7 m tall with its light 83.2 m above sea level; a rotating LED lamp has been in use since 2019.
In 1933 the lighthouse was named after the novelist Stefan Żeromski. Local legend says he wrote his book "Wind from the Sea" here, although he only visited and wrote it in Warsaw. A plaque honors keeper Leon Wzorek, arrested by the Germans in September 1939 and murdered at Piaśnica.
Allow 1–1.5 hours for both towers and the exhibition. The stairs are narrow and steep, so the towers are not accessible to wheelchair users. Outside July and August there is a midday break, so arrive in the morning.
The towers are run by the Society of Friends of the National Maritime Museum (TPNMM). Its website, which gives no year, lists:
The address is ul. Leona Wzorka 1, Rozewie. Take the regional train from Gdynia to Władysławowo, then walk or taxi a few kilometers west; the blue coastal trail passes the lighthouse. By car, follow the road from Władysławowo toward Jastrzębia Góra.
Yes: two climbable towers, a museum and a beech-forest cape make it one of the best lighthouse visits in Poland. Come in season.
