Blizne, Subcarpathian
All Saints' Church in Blizne (say "BLEEZ-neh") is a 15th-century Gothic wooden church in southeastern Poland, set on a small rise among old trees and surrounded by a complete group of historic timber parish buildings. Since 2003 it has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage property "Wooden Churches of Southern Małopolska." Its walls are covered with paintings from three different eras, including a vast Last Judgment, making it one of the most rewarding stops on the wooden-church trail of the Podkarpackie region.
Blizne is a village in the Podkarpackie (Subcarpathian) region, 8 km (5 miles) from Brzozów, 23 km from Krosno and about 44 km (27 miles) south of Rzeszów – around an hour by car. Rzeszów-Jasionka Airport is the nearest international airport. From Kraków allow about 200 km and 2.5–3 hours. The UNESCO-listed church in Haczów is only 17 km away, so the two make a natural pair. The parish does not publish parking information; ask when you announce your visit.
The church dates from the mid-15th century, and the first reliable record of it comes from 1470. It was built of fir logs on a stone foundation. In the 17th century the complex was fortified – churches in this border region doubled as refuges during raids – and a tower with sloping walls and an overhanging belfry was added in the first half of that century.
Later alterations removed the covered arcades, clad the walls in shingles, added a porch and enlarged the sacristy (sources give 1745 or 1811 for this work). In the 19th century the old murals were painted over. Conservation in the 1960s and early 1970s uncovered them again, revealing Gothic and early modern layers; the altars were restored in 1992–1996 and the paintings in 2000–2001.
The interior is a gallery of wall painting from around 1549–1550, 1649 and about 1700:
Look also for the high altar of 1700, two late-Baroque side altars – the left one holds a Madonna of 1515–1520, the surviving figure of a Gothic Annunciation altarpiece, venerated locally as Our Lady Full of Grace (according to legend, it stood for years in a shrine in a linden tree before returning to the church in 1970) – a late-Renaissance pulpit of 1604, an 18th-century wooden font and a Baroque Passion group on the rood beam. As in many old churches here, the windows open only to the south; in the chancel they have late-Gothic ogee arches.
What makes Blizne unique is the setting. A wooden fence with small 19th-century brick chapels encloses the churchyard, and next to it stand the vicar's house from before 1699 (now the parish museum), a storehouse and the organist's house. On the hill across the road, a shrine to St. Michael commemorates the village's defense against the Tatars in 1624.
According to the parish, the old church can be visited:
The visitor office is currently closed, so you must announce your visit in advance by phone (+48 782 458 050 or +48 13 430 56 00) or email (parafiablizne@gmail.com). The interior can be seen only with a local guide; groups should book at least a day ahead, and visits are not possible during services. The parish website also streams a live camera view.

Winter 2026/27: from November to April all Masses take place in the new parish church. The parish lists the same visiting hours year-round, but in winter it is even more important to confirm by phone; the old church is unheated.
Yes – Blizne is less famous than Dębno or Haczów, yet its murals and intact parish complex are exceptional and you will rarely meet crowds. Plan about an hour. Nearby you can explore St. Michael's Hill, the sandstone rock formations of the Czarnorzeki-Strzyżów Landscape Park, the reservoir in Blizne and the manor park in Jasienica Rosielna, or continue to Haczów and Krosno.
