Żarnowiec, Subcarpathian
In this manor house near Krosno, Maria Konopnicka wrote, among other works, "Rota" – a patriotic song that generations of Poles still know by heart. She received the house and its park in 1903 as a gift from the nation to mark 25 years of her literary work, and today it is a biographical museum with original interiors, a granary building and a historic park of more than three hectares. A guided tour takes about an hour.
The manor and park were handed over to the poet in the name of the nation on 8 September 1903. Konopnicka moved in with the painter Maria Dulębianka: she wrote in the study on the ground floor, while Dulębianka had a studio upstairs. They spent springs and summers here and travelled out of season to Austria, France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland, whose climate was good for the poet's health. Konopnicka left the house on 15 September 1910, went to a sanatorium in Lviv and died there on 8 October; she is buried in Lychakiv Cemetery.
After her death her daughters – the actress Laura Pytlińska and Zofia Mickiewiczowa – lived in the house. During the German occupation Zofia helped the partisans, and for a time the manor served as the headquarters of the Home Army's Krosno inspectorate; her husband Adam Stanisław Mickiewicz died in Auschwitz. In 1943 the building was turned into a military hospital. After the war the actress Wanda Siemaszkowa lived here and died in the house in 1947. In 1956 the heirs gave the manor and park to the nation, the museum was founded in 1957 and the exhibitions opened on 15 September 1960.
Arrive a few minutes before the hour, as the manor is visited in guided groups. Leave time for the park afterwards – it is the easiest place to imagine the two artists' summers here. If you want to see Dulębianka's studio, come out of season. The museum closes on some public holidays, so check the calendar on its website before you go.
