Palaces
Dukla, Subcarpathian
The Historical Museum in the Mniszech Palace in Dukla is housed in a late-Baroque magnate residence, one of the best-preserved palaces in southeastern Poland. Its "entre cour et jardin" layout, between a forecourt and a garden, is unique in the voivodeship, and a landscaped park with ponds surrounds it. Inside you can see displays on the history of Dukla and the palace and exhibits on the 1944 Battle of the Carpathians and the Dukla Pass. In summer, look for the palace's famous storks.
Dukla is a small town on the old Hungarian Trail in the Podkarpackie Voivodeship, about 25 km from Krosno and roughly 85 km from Rzeszów, the nearest airport. The Slovak border is close. From Kraków it is a long day trip. A car is the practical choice, and we found no official information on parking.
In 1540 Dukla passed to Jan Jordan of Zakliczyn, who built a brick castle. In 1636 to 1638 Franciszek Bernard Mniszech rebuilt the ruin as a fortified palace. Its golden age came under Jerzy August Mniszech: in 1755 he founded one of the first Masonic lodges in Poland here, and in 1764 to 1765 he gave the residence its present form. The cavalry commander Casimir Pulaski, who later fought in the American Revolution, was a frequent guest in 1769 and 1770.
Austrian troops took over the palace in 1772 and used it as barracks. It later belonged to the Potocki, Ossoliński, Stadnicki and Męciński families, and the last of them assembled one of the largest painting collections in Galicia. Fires in 1810, 1821 and 1848, and then wartime destruction, left it a ruin. After World War II it stood without a roof for years. Walls were secured and the mansard roof rebuilt in 1962 to 1963, and in the 1980s the reconstruction was completed and the Historical Museum opened. The Tarnowski family regained the complex on 18 September 2012.
Allow 1 to 1.5 hours for the interiors and about two with the park. The military displays suit history fans and children who like hardware, and the park paths are good for a stroll. We could not confirm rules on dogs or accessibility, so ask by phone. English signage is not guaranteed.
About 400 m away stands the Bernardine church and monastery, and in Krosno the Podkarpackie Museum shows a major kerosene lamp collection.
