Haczów, Subcarpathian
The wooden church in Haczów (say "HAH-choof"), dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and St. Michael the Archangel, is the largest Gothic wooden church in Europe and one of the oldest log-built churches in Poland. It stands in the Wisłok valley in southeastern Poland, near the town of Krosno, and has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage property "Wooden Churches of Southern Małopolska" since 2003. Its walls carry figural paintings from 1494 – the largest surviving set of 15th-century figural murals in Poland.
Haczów is a village in the Podkarpackie (Subcarpathian) region, about 12 km (7.5 miles) from Krosno and 55 km (34 miles) from Rzeszów, roughly an hour's drive. Rzeszów-Jasionka Airport is the closest international airport. From Kraków the drive is about 180 km, or 2.5–3 hours. A car gives you the most flexibility, especially if you want to combine Haczów with the second UNESCO church at Blizne, about 17 km away. The parish does not publish parking details, so ask about space for your car when you book a guide.
The church was built in the first half of the 15th century. You will often see the year 1388 quoted, but that is a traditional date and art historians place the present building later. In 1494 the interior was covered with monumental figural paintings.
In 1624 the church was badly damaged during a Tatar raid. The rebuilding added a bell tower, a small roof turret, covered arcades (soboty), round windows in the nave and an earth rampart. Another major renovation in 1784–1789 brought a larger sacristy, new arcades and a side chapel, and a new layer of paintings followed around 1864.
When a new brick church was built next door in 1944, the old one fell out of use and was managed by the state from 1948 to 1980. Returned to the parish, it underwent years of conservation and was reconsecrated on November 13, 2000. The National Bank of Poland featured it on 2- and 20-złoty commemorative coins in 2006.
The parish opens the historic church with a guide by prior telephone booking: +48 534 557 009 (as of October 2026). No fixed opening hours or ticket prices are published; ask about the expected donation (in Polish złoty, PLN) when you call. Guides may be unavailable during parish services. In winter the church is unheated and the timber and paintings are sensitive to moisture, so dress warmly and reconfirm your slot the day before. The exterior can be admired year-round.
Yes, if medieval art and architecture interest you – it is one of the most impressive timber buildings in Central Europe and far less crowded than Kraków's sights. Allow 45–60 minutes for a guided visit. Nearby you can explore Krosno's market square with its arcaded houses, the All Saints Church in Blizne, and the Krosno–Brzozów section of the Podkarpackie Wooden Architecture Route.
