St Nicholas Church in Gąsawa

St. Nicholas Church in Gąsawa (pronounced "gon-SAH-vah") is a 17th-century wooden church in the Pałuki region of north-central Poland that hides one of the country's most surprising interiors. Behind its plain dark timber walls, the ceilings and walls are covered in baroque paintings that lay forgotten under plaster for about 150 years until workers stumbled upon them in 1998–1999. It is also a Marian shrine and an easy stop on the way to the famous Iron Age settlement at Biskupin.

Where it is and how to get there

Gąsawa is a small town about 80 km (50 miles) north-east of Poznań and 60 km south of Bydgoszcz; Poznań has the nearest major airport. A car is the practical choice. The church stands in the town center at Żnińska 1. The currency is the Polish złoty (PLN), but entry to the church is free.

History and the hidden paintings

Gąsawa appears in a papal bull of 1136 and for centuries belonged to the Canons Regular of Trzemeszno, who built the present church of larch in a mixed log-and-timber-frame technique. Its date is debated: many sources say around 1625, while historian Dariusz Sobczak cites visitation records and an inscription pointing to a new church built in 1674, after Swedish troops plundered the area.

Around 1850 the Prussian authorities refused permission to replace the church with a brick one. The parish repaired the crumbling building but could not afford to restore its paintings, so they were covered with reeds and plaster. During a renovation in 1998–1999, workers removed plaster from a beam and found a painted figure of St. Augustine. Archive records in Gniezno confirmed more paintings, and step by step a multi-layered baroque scheme emerged; one layer dates from 1705–1706. It is considered one of the largest surviving sets of baroque wall paintings in any wooden church in Poland.

What to look for

• The Last Judgment and a rare scene of the suffering Job.
• Three scenes from the life of St. Augustine, whose rule the canons followed.
• Angel musicians on the chancel ceiling and a painted organ front around an instrument from 1815.
• The Woman of the Apocalypse at the center of the ceiling, surrounded by the four Evangelists.
• Large painted "tapestries" with Gospel scenes.
• The 17th-century image of Our Lady of Consolation on the high altar, framed by a painted tent held by angels.
• A late Gothic Crucifixion group on the rood beam, and a brick rotunda from 1817 with a moving Nativity scene.

Tip: pause at the back of the nave and take in the whole room before hunting for details; a wide-angle lens helps.

Visiting tips

This is a working parish church with no ticket desk. The easiest time to get in is around Mass. As of October 2026, weekday Mass is at 5 p.m. and Sunday Masses are at 7:15, 9:30 and 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. For visits at other times, contact the parish (+48 603 750 754; Polish is likely needed). Allow 30–45 minutes, dress modestly and avoid visiting during services.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, especially combined with Biskupin's reconstructed prehistoric settlement a few kilometers away and the narrow-gauge railway museum in nearby Wenecja. Gąsawa is also where Duke Leszek the White was assassinated in 1227, an event marked by a monument.
