Pałuki Land Museum in Żnin

The Pałuki Land Museum operates in the heart of the historic Pałuki region, with its main seat in the former town hall (Magistrat) on the market square of Żnin. The red-brick building was raised in 1906 to house the town authorities; today it presents exhibitions on the history of printing, ethnography and, less obviously, powerboating. The seat also hosts the Tadeusz Małachowski Gallery, a hall for temporary exhibitions.

One museum, several branches

The institution runs several sites in and around Żnin: the Baszta — the old town-hall tower on Wolności square, the Żnin County Railway, better known as the Żnin narrow-gauge train, plus the Narrow-Gauge Railway Museum and the castle with siege engines in Wenecja near Żnin. A single institution thus tells the story of the region from old fortifications to narrow-gauge railways. The museum forms part of the Piast Trail.

Practicalities

The main seat is open Tuesday to Friday, 9:00–17:00, and on weekends 10:00–15:00 (closed Mondays). It is worth combining a visit with a ride on the Żnin narrow-gauge railway — both branches lie within walking distance.
