Church of St Catherine in Nowy Targ

The Church of St Catherine of Alexandria in Nowy Targ is the town’s oldest surviving monument and one of the key historic landmarks of Podhale. The small church stands on Kościelna Street, a few steps from the market square.

A royal foundation in Podhale

The parish was mentioned as early as 1326, and the church is linked with the foundation of Nowy Targ under Casimir the Great. In a charter of 1346 the king endowed the parish of St Catherine with land, confirming its importance in the developing settlement. The present church retains a medieval lineage, although it was rebuilt after fires and damage over the centuries.

Wall, gate tower and mountain views

The churchyard is enclosed by a wall with a distinctive gate tower topped by a belfry. This feature sets the church apart from a typical urban parish building and recalls the former enclosed churchyard. The surroundings are quiet, while views open towards the Gorce and the ranges around the Nowy Targ Valley.
