Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Żyglin

The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Żyglin, now part of Miasteczko Śląskie, has medieval roots, but the present masonry church dates from 1842. For centuries it was the centre of an extensive parish covering many Upper Silesian settlements. It is a useful stop for visitors combining local history with a short route around Tarnowskie Góry.

A foundation legend

Local tradition connects the first church in Żyglin with 1253 and a story about three dukes who supposedly found refuge in the surrounding forests. This is a legend, not a secure foundation date. Medieval roots of the settlement are documented, but the story of the earliest church should be kept separate from the better-attested later stages.

The 1842 church

The wooden predecessor most probably burned down around 1700; the smaller church built after the fire eventually fell into disrepair. The present, more substantial church was completed in 1842. A tall, four-sided tower front was added in 1873–1874. The building is single-nave, with a presbytery closed by a semicircular apse.
