Staw Gierzyna Ponds near Miasteczko Śląskie

In the forest near Miasteczko Śląskie, about 3 kilometres from the Nakło-Chechło reservoir, hides Gierzyna. It is in fact several smaller ponds connected by a stream and backwaters, protected as an ecological site. The place remains quiet and rarely crowded, so it is best visited in the morning, when silence prevails and birds are easiest to spot.

An ecological site and a bird haven

The Gierzyna fishery attracts anglers, but above all nature lovers. Herons wade in the shallows, storks circle overhead and mallards swim on the water. The birds are not tame, so binoculars or a long lens come in handy. Trees gnawed by beavers grow by the stream; the animals themselves are hard to spot, but the traces of their work are visible at every step. Wetlands and lush water-loving vegetation create a habitat rare in this part of the conurbation.

Getting there and trails

The most pleasant way to reach Gierzyna is by bike. The marked Leśna Rajza cycling trail, with green and yellow signs, leads to the ponds, among others from the popular Nakło-Chechło lake; the route is about 3 kilometres long and runs along forest paths past beaver sites. You can leave your car on the Miasteczko Śląskie side, turning into Stacyjna street. It is worth combining the visit with a forest walk and peaceful birdwatching, far from the crowds and infrastructure, of which there is simply none here.
