Cemetery Church in Głogówek

The Church of the Holy Cross in Głogówek is a small half-timbered cemetery church from 1705. Its timber frame with brick infill, shingle roof and position in the old cemetery create a very different atmosphere from the town’s collegiate church. It is a worthwhile stop for anyone interested in wooden sacred architecture in the Opole region.

Construction and setting

The church has distinctive Prussian-wall construction and a small belfry turret on the ridge. Stations of the Cross painted on wood hang along the exterior arcades. Its elevated position among gravestones makes it best experienced as a quiet short walk, not merely a quick photograph of the façade.

The most valuable details

The interior preserves 17th-century polychromed wooden sculptures, including Christ Crucified, Our Lady of Sorrows and St John. A Pietà inspired by Michelangelo’s work is the particular highlight. The small scale makes it easier to focus on details, but access inside is not always as open as in a large parish church.

Practical information

The church stands on Podgórna Street and belongs to St Bartholomew’s parish. Contact the parish before planning an interior visit, so you can confirm access outside services. Nearby are the Loreto sanctuary, the collegiate church and Głogówek Castle; Moszna Palace is about 12 kilometres away. Allow half a day for the town’s main sights together.
