Brothers Hospitallers Monastery in Prudnik

The Brothers Hospitallers Monastery in Prudnik at 6 Piastowska Street combines the Baroque Church of Saints Peter and Paul with the history of an order that has cared for the sick since the 18th century. The foundation began in 1764 through the efforts of Colonel Friedrich Wilhelm von Röder, who had been treated by the Brothers. It is a worthwhile stop for visitors interested in architecture, medical history and Prudnik’s heritage.

The Church of Saints Peter and Paul

The most accessible part of the complex is the single-nave church built in 1785–1787. A Baroque tower was added in 1793. The interior preserves 18th- and 19th-century furnishings, including the main altar with the patron saints, side altars, ceiling murals and an organ transferred from the former Capuchin church. Notice the church’s unusual north-facing orientation.

Monastery, hospital and pharmacy

In 1766 the Brothers opened a small hospital with a chapel and pharmacy. A larger monastery and hospital followed in 1782–1783, and the complex expanded during the 19th and 20th centuries. After the Second World War the hospital was nationalised, while the Brothers retained part of the monastery and the church.

This is an active religious site, so interior access may depend on services and current notices. Check the Brothers’ website before travelling; Mass times are not the same as sightseeing hours. The church is in central Prudnik, close to the Old Town and a park, making it easy to include in a city walk.
