Collegiate Church in Kartuzy

The Collegiate Church in Kartuzy is the town’s most valuable monument and a surviving witness to the former Carthusian charterhouse. The Gothic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was begun in 1381 and consecrated in 1403. Its distinctive coffin-lid-shaped roof recalls the Carthusians’ austere, contemplative spirituality.

Church and art

Inside, look for Gothic architecture, Baroque furnishings, vaults and the leather wall coverings in the presbytery. The collegiate church remains a parish church, so visits follow the rhythm of services. In summer it also hosts the Kartuzy Festival of Organ and Chamber Music.

Remains of the charterhouse

The former complex was much larger: the monks’ hermitages and most cloisters have not survived. One hermitage, part of the Great Cloister and other former monastic buildings remain. Walk around the church and read it as the centre of the former “Paradise of Mary”, then combine the visit with Lake Klasztorne and Kartuzy’s museums.

Practical information

The church is at 5 Klasztorna Street. Check service times and current visitor arrangements before entering; parts of the former monastery are not a tourist route. Allow 30–45 minutes for the church and surviving complex. It is a good base for exploring Kashubia and the Kashubian Landscape Park.
