St Nicholas Cathedral in Bielsko-Biała

St Nicholas Cathedral in Bielsko-Biała is one of the oldest and most important landmarks in the city centre. It stands on St Nicholas Square, close to the former ducal castle, and serves as the principal church of the Diocese of Bielsko-Żywiec. Its exterior combines medieval remains with 19th- and early-20th-century rebuilding, making it a compact lesson in several periods of architecture.

History of the cathedral

The masonry church of St Nicholas was built from 1443 on the initiative of Duke Wacław I of Cieszyn and consecrated in 1447. Between 1559 and 1630 it belonged to Lutherans. It was rebuilt repeatedly after fires, including major disasters in 1659, 1750, 1808 and 1836. The present appearance reflects a later enlargement designed by Leopold Bauer, while in 1992 the church became the cathedral of the newly established diocese.

Architecture and interior

Traces of the Gothic structure survive in the presbytery, while the façade and enlarged nave display later historicist styles. Look for the sculptures of patron saints on the façade, the statue of St Nicholas, an 1845 painting of the patron and the stained glass, including the oldest panels from 1894 and Art Nouveau work from 1911. The Sunnegh Chapel contains a 17th-century image of Our Lady of Częstochowa.

The cathedral is an active church, so quiet sightseeing depends on Masses and ceremonies. Check parish notices before visiting, keep silent inside and do not treat parish-office hours as visitor hours.
