Bear Grotto in Złoty Potok

Bear Grotto in Złoty Potok lies in the Wiercica Valley, within the Parkowe nature reserve in the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland. It is a natural cave with a spacious chamber and darker, damp passages, not a lit show cave with guided tours. Treat it as one stop on a reserve walk combining nature, geology and the history of Złoty Potok.

Why it is called Bear Grotto

The name refers to animal bones discovered here in the 19th century. Research material mentions cave bear and other fossil animals. The original bones are not a museum display inside the grotto; finds are held in collections. Its underground passages are not intended for casual exploration.

Reserve and access

The designated “Ku Źródłom” trail runs near Bear Grotto, Emerald Pond, Green Pond, the Spełnionych Marzeń spring and Kołaczew Mill. Follow only routes marked by the environmental authorities and do not cut through the forest. Since 16 September 2025, dogs may use the designated “Ku Źródłom” route, subject to signs and reserve regulations.

Safe visiting

The natural entrance may be slippery, dark and damp. Bring a headlamp and shoes with good grip; do not enter tight passages without experience and suitable equipment. Do not touch sediments, bones or rock surfaces. Check the RDOŚ notice, current route and parking rules before travelling. The walk pairs well with Złoty Potok’s palace, ponds and historic mills.
