Twardowski Gate in Zloty Potok

Twardowski Gate near Złoty Potok is a limestone rock outlier with a natural opening that resembles a gateway. The formation stands in the forested part of the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland, in the Parkowe reserve area, and is one of the most distinctive sights around Złoty Potok. The opening is about 4 metres high, but the name does not describe a built structure — it is the result of geology and erosion.

Rock and legend

The opening inspired a legend about Pan Twardowski, who supposedly fled the devil on a rooster. Local tradition says that the sorcerer pushed off from the rock, leaving the passage behind. The name Twardowski Gate is attributed to the poet Zygmunt Krasiński during his stays in Złoty Potok; he also named other local rocks, springs and ponds.

How to reach it

The gate is in the forest, about 50 metres from the local road from Złoty Potok towards Siedlec. The green-marked Trail of the 7th Infantry Division, about 7.3 km long, runs nearby. Forest information places the rock roughly 900 metres from a car park by provincial road 793. Check the current parking point and path before travelling.

Practical information

This is a free outdoor site with no ticket office or fixed opening hours. The rock is viewed from a forest path, without the facilities of a major attraction. Roots, leaves and limestone may be slippery after rain. Do not climb fragile sections, damage vegetation or ignore the rules of the Parkowe reserve. In the area, combine the walk with the Zygmunt and Elżbieta springs, the Wiercica Valley and other rock formations around Złoty Potok.
