Stronghold on Birów Hill

The Birów Hill Stronghold in Podzamcze is a timber reconstruction of a medieval fortified settlement, built on a rocky limestone hill about 1.5 km (1 mile) from Ogrodzieniec Castle in southern Poland. The palisade, towers and huts stand where archaeologists found traces of the original stronghold – and the caves in the same rocks show that people sheltered here some 30,000 years ago. It is a short, vivid history lesson and an easy add-on to a castle visit.

Where it is

Podzamcze (roughly "pod-ZAM-cheh") is a village in the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland, a limestone landscape known for its chain of hilltop castles called the Trail of the Eagles' Nests. It is about an hour's drive from both Katowice and Kraków; Katowice Airport is the closest international airport. The nearest railway town is Zawiercie, with buses to Podzamcze.

Thirty thousand years of history

Birów rises to 461 m above sea level. Its rock shelters were used in the late Paleolithic: finds include reindeer antler, cave bear bones and flint tools. Later the hill was settled in the Neolithic, the Bronze Age and the Roman period. The last stronghold was probably built in the 13th century and burned in the first half of the 14th century. The site's operator links the fire to the struggle between Władysław the Elbow-high (Łokietek) and the Bohemian king Wenceslas for the throne of Kraków, pointing to a coin bearing Wenceslas's image found on the hill. A small barrow cemetery at the foot of the hill, excavated in 1992, held three mounds without human remains.

What you will see

The reconstruction was built in 2007–2008. Inside the palisade you will find:

• the central yard, timber walls and guard walkways,
• a warriors' tower with an exhibition and finds from the excavations,
• the lord's hut with a second display,
• lookout platforms with wide views over the Jura, including Ogrodzieniec Castle on the next hill.

The surrounding rocks are also a popular climbing spot.

Tickets and opening hours (as of October 2026)

• Hours: Monday–Friday 10 am–3 pm, Saturday–Sunday 10 am–4 pm; open year-round.
• Stronghold only: PLN 10 standard, PLN 8 reduced.
• Combined castle + stronghold ticket: PLN 38 standard, PLN 27 reduced.
• Children under 3 and wheelchair users enter free.

Tickets are sold at the office on Partyzantów Street in Podzamcze and online, and are valid on the day of purchase only. Card payments are accepted.

Tips for your visit

Allow about 30 minutes inside, plus time to get there from the castle. Paths are grassy and sloping with wooden steps, so wear sturdy shoes; strollers are impractical. Dogs are welcome on a leash. Guided tours, including in English, can be booked through the order form on the castle website.

Is it worth visiting?

If you are already at Ogrodzieniec Castle, yes: the combined ticket costs only slightly more, and the stronghold shows a completely different, much older layer of local history. Families with children tend to enjoy climbing the towers and walls.
