Stronghold on Birów Hill

The stronghold on Birów Hill in Podzamcze is a timber reconstruction of an early-medieval fortified settlement, about 1.5 km from Ogrodzieniec Castle. Its ramparts, palisade and huts show what a stronghold from the age of Poland’s first Piasts may have looked like. It pairs the castle with archaeology and a short Jurassic walk.

The history of Birów Hill

Birów’s caves and rocks contain traces of human presence dating back about 30,000 years. A Slavic settlement stood here in the Middle Ages, and the last stronghold was probably built in the 13th century. Natural rock, ramparts and a palisade strengthened its defences. Archaeologists found tools, arrowheads, pottery and traces of everyday life; a barrow cemetery survives at the foot of the hill.

What you can see

The reconstruction includes timber defences, a courtyard, huts and a warriors’ tower. The buildings contain themed displays and selected artefacts found during excavations. The stronghold is therefore more than a scenic reconstruction: it helps explain how the settlement was organised and how its people lived. On selected dates, visitors can join living-history lessons, guided walks and educational events.

Tickets and planning your visit

The stronghold is a paid attraction managed with Ogrodzieniec Castle. Separate and combined tickets are available; prices and opening hours vary by season, so check the castle’s official website. The ticket office is on Partyzantów Street in Podzamcze. Allow time for the walk, wear comfortable shoes and do not explore the caves unguided.
