Grochowiec Wielki in Ryczów

Grochowiec Wielki is a rocky hill rising to 486 metres above sea level, between Ryczów and Żelazko in the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland. It is about 2 km from Ryczów and roughly 5 km from Ogrodzieniec Castle. The limestone massif combines a viewpoint, a metal cross and a notable climbing area.

Słoń, Nosorożec, Tapir and Pancernik

Grochowiec consists of limestone outcrops known as Słoń (Elephant), Nosorożec (Rhinoceros), Tapir and Pancernik (Armadillo). The rocks are a recognised climbing destination, with walls and routes of varied difficulty. A metal cross stands on the summit, which has earned the hill the informal nickname Little Giewont. The name is a local comparison, not an indication of the mountain’s scale or character.

Views and trails nearby

The open, grassy summit looks across the Jurassic landscape around Ryczów; in clear weather, the panorama reaches towards the Carpathians. Several trails run through Ryczów, including the blue Trail of the Jurassic Fortresses towards the Ogrodzieniec Castle ruins and Smoleń. You can combine the walk with the ruins of Ryczów watchtower and other outcrops in the Ryczów climbing area.

Practical information

Grochowiec is not a developed viewpoint, so do not expect marked access, toilets or permanent visitor services. The approach from Ryczów follows local roads and field paths; check a map and conditions before setting out. Sturdy shoes are useful. The rocks are for visitors with suitable climbing experience and equipment: do not enter routes without preparation and keep clear of climbers below the walls.
