Main Beskid Trail

The Main Beskid Trail (Główny Szlak Beskidzki, or GSB) is Poland's longest mountain trail: a red-blazed route of roughly 500 km (310 miles) running from Ustroń in the Silesian Beskids to Wołosate (pronounced "vo-woh-SAH-teh") in the Bieszczady Mountains on the Ukrainian border. It crosses every major range of the Polish Beskids – part of the Carpathians – and is to Polish hikers what a classic long trail like the Appalachian Trail is to Americans, only shorter and with mountain huts along the way.

History

The western half, from Ustroń to Krynica, was laid out by Kazimierz Sosnowski, after whom the trail is named, and completed in 1929. The eastern half, designed by Mieczysław Orłowicz, followed in 1935. Before World War II the route continued much farther east into what is now Ukraine; after the border changes of 1945 it was shortened to its current course within Poland.

The route, range by range

• Silesian Beskids: start in Ustroń, then Czantoria, Stożek and Barania Góra.
• Żywiec and Maków Beskids: Babia Góra (1,725 m / 5,659 ft), the trail's highest point, and Polica.
• Gorce: Rabka-Zdrój, Turbacz (1,310 m) and Lubań, with views of the Tatras.
• Sącz Beskids: Przehyba, Radziejowa, Jaworzyna Krynicka and the spa town of Krynica-Zdrój.
• Low Beskids: quiet wooded hills, abandoned Lemko villages and wooden churches, spa towns Iwonicz-Zdrój and Rymanów-Zdrój.
• Bieszczady: the grassy ridges (połoniny) of Wetlińska and Caryńska, Halicz and the finish in Wołosate.

The landscape changes from busy, well-equipped western ranges to some of the wildest, emptiest country in Central Europe.

How long does it take?

Sources differ: about 496 km or 519 km (in the rules of the Polish Tatra Society badge), depending on variants. At 20–25 km a day that is roughly three weeks of walking without rest days. Mountain huts (schroniska) and guesthouses make it possible to hike without a tent, but in the Low Beskids and Bieszczady stages can be long, so book or plan ahead in summer.

Doing it in sections

You don't have to thru-hike. Many Poles complete the GSB over several years, in any direction. The Polish Tatra Society (PTT) awards a badge for the full trail with no time limit; proof comes from hut stamps or photos at key points. For a first taste, try a day section with easy public transport, such as Ustroń to Wisła over Czantoria, or Rabka to Turbacz.

Best day hikes on the GSB

If you want a taste before committing to the whole trail, pick a section with good transport at both ends:

• Ustroń – Czantoria – Stożek – Wisła: the very start of the trail; you can skip the first climb by riding the Czantoria chairlift.
• Babia Góra from Krowiarki Pass: the trail's high point, with views to the Tatras on clear days, inside Babia Góra National Park.
• Rabka-Zdrój – Turbacz: a gentle climb in the Gorce Mountains ending at a mountain hut below the range's highest summit.
• Połonina Wetlińska and Połonina Caryńska: the most scenic stretch in the Bieszczady, along open grassy ridges above the tree line.

Where to sleep

Along the route you'll find PTTK mountain huts and smaller shelters – for example on Stożek, Turbacz and Przehyba, and the "Pod Honem" hut above Cisna – plus guesthouses in the villages. Huts usually serve hot meals, so you can carry a lighter pack, but book ahead in July, August and on long weekends.

Planning tips

• Best season: late spring to early fall. Winter hiking requires experience and gear.
• Navigation: the red blazes are good, but carry an offline map; signage is in Polish.
• Water: springs can be scarce in the Low Beskids.
• Wildlife: brown bears live in the Bieszczady – store food properly.
• National parks: sections cross the Babia Góra, Gorce and Bieszczady national parks, where park rules (and entry fees in Polish złoty) apply.

Getting to the start and finish

Ustroń is about 80 km (50 miles) south of Katowice, with direct regional trains to Ustroń Zdrój station. Wołosate, at the eastern end, is reached by minibus or car via Ustrzyki Górne; the nearest airport is Rzeszów, and the drive from Kraków takes several hours.
