Fortifications
Świnoujście, West Pomeranian
The fort's German name – Engelsburg, the Angel's Castle – is no accident. Its round, stepped brick tower reminded the builders of Rome's Castel Sant'Angelo, the papal fortress on the Tiber. Fort Angel was built in the mid-19th century as an artillery and observation post of the Prussian fortress of Swinemünde (today Świnoujście), and after 1945 the Soviet navy watched the skies from here for almost half a century. Today it is a private museum with a café, a Viking hall and a rose garden on the roof.
The fort, designated Fort III, was built in 1854–1858 under King Frederick William IV of Prussia to defend the western group of fortifications from the landward side. The three-storey rotunda, topped with a terrace and an observation turret, was surrounded by pentagonal earth ramparts with a fortified gate and, by 1863, a double water-filled moat. Infantry with small arms held the ground floor, light field artillery the upper floors. Guns and ammunition were hauled up on ropes through oval openings in the ceilings. The tower housed the commandant's quarters, and the top floor held an observation and command post for the whole fortress.
In 1870–1880 three gun shelters, a small powder magazine and a shelter for the gunners were built into the inner rampart; in the second half of the 19th century the garrison was a company of about 100 soldiers. Telegraph and electricity arrived towards the end of the century. Between the wars the fort was adapted for chemical warfare, with gas-tight doors and armoured window covers, and an anti-aircraft radio post was set up on the turret. In the Second World War it served as an air-observation post with radar, and a narrow-gauge railway linked it to the other fortifications. In May 1945 the German crew left by ship for the west without a fight. After the war the Soviet navy took over; according to the owners, it was an air-observation and naval communications post until 1992.
