Świnoujście, West Pomeranian
The Świnoujście promenade (say "shvee-no-OOYSH-cheh") is the seafront walkway of this Polish spa town on the island of Usedom, running parallel to the beach from the harbor breakwater to the German border. Its big selling point: it continues straight into Germany, linking up with the historic resorts of Ahlbeck, Heringsdorf and Bansin. You can stroll or cycle from Poland to Germany along the Baltic without ever getting in a car – a rare treat in Europe.
The seaside boulevard dates back to before World War II, when the town – then the German resort of Swinemünde – was a fashionable bathing spot. Today maps name several parallel paths:
Boardwalk-style crossings lead through the dunes to the beach, which is up to 200 m (660 ft) wide here.
Świnoujście and the German municipality of Heringsdorf began planning a shared promenade in 2007, and construction officially started on October 29, 2010. The joint route is nearly 12 km (7.5 miles) long, running from the windmill-shaped Stawa Młyny beacon on the Western Breakwater to Bansin. It is also "kilometer zero" for the Polish stretch of the EuroVelo 10 and 13 cycle routes.
Both countries are in the Schengen Area, so there are no border checks. About 4–5 km west of the middle of Świnoujście's promenade you reach Ahlbeck pier, first built in 1882 and extended in 1898, and considered Germany's oldest pier.
Swinemünde was declared a seaside resort in 1824 and a spa in 1895, after brine springs and therapeutic mud were found. A district of guesthouses and villas grew up by the sea, separated from the port by a green belt that is now the Spa Park. Allied air raids on March 12, 1945, destroyed much of the town, but a number of old villas survived and now stand restored beside modern hotels. The spa still uses local brine today.
The path is flat and paved, so it works well with strollers and wheelchairs. Summer evenings get busy near the fountain and bandstand. Cyclists should stick to the marked bike lanes.
