Wooden Church in Świniary

Key information

The Church of St. Stanislaus Bishop and Martyr in Świniary, in the Solec-Zdrój commune, is a wooden monument in the Ponidzie region. Built in 1716, it was funded by Michał Zieliński, dean of Liw. It is an oriented, single-nave log church with a narrower, three-sided chancel.

History and architecture

The parish is older: a parish priest in Świniary is mentioned as early as 1326, while a wooden church is recorded in 1440. The present church was extended in 1798 by lengthening the nave and connecting it with the originally free-standing tower. A masonry chapel was added in 1874, followed by a sacristy in 1902. The tower has a masonry lower section, wooden upper levels and an onion-shaped cupola.

What to see

The chancel contains a Late Baroque main altarpiece with Rococo ornament, a crucifix and Baroque sculptures. The nave has two side altars: one with an early-17th-century image of St. Anne Metterza, the other with an 18th-century depiction of St. Stanislaus. Also look for the 18th-century pulpit, stone baptismal font, choir gallery and Rococo organ front. The 1935–1938 polychromy includes scenes of St. Stanislaus and the Coronation of the Virgin Mary.
