St. Blaise Church in Bryksy

The pilgrimage Church of St Brice in Bryksy is a wooden church hidden among old trees between Gościęcin and Kózki in Kędzierzyn-Koźle County. It belongs to the parish of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Gościęcin.

History and architecture

A chapel and spring were recorded here in 1594. The present pilgrimage chapel was completed in 1661 and consecrated in 1674 by Bishop Karl Franz Neander von Petersheide. The church is a log-built structure on a stone-and-brick base. Its unusual plan is a Latin cross with all arms ending in three-sided closures.

Interior and pilgrimage complex

Inside, look for the wooden barrel vaults, music gallery and side galleries. The high altar contains an image of the Virgin and Child, while a side altar holds a 1896 image of St Brice. The former hermitage and two chapels survive beside the church. St Brice’s Spring is an important part of the site, but claims about healing properties are traditional rather than established medical information.
