Wooden Church in Baborów

On the edge of Baborów, in the Głubczyce Plateau, stands the wooden Church of St Joseph and St Barbara. The larch church was built in 1700–1702 on the site of a pilgrimage chapel. Its distinctive features are a Greek-cross plan and rich Baroque furnishings, making it a quiet stop for anyone interested in wooden architecture.

History and layout

The founder was the local parish priest, Father Szymon Piotr Motłoch; Katarzyna von Larisch donated the timber. The church has a log structure and a Greek-cross plan with chapels of the Angels and Our Lady of the Scapular. It is not oriented east.

Polychrome and furnishings

The interior retains its Baroque character. Early-18th-century polychrome attributed to Krauze shows, among other scenes, St Joseph with the Child, St Michael the Archangel and St Barbara’s martyrdom. Also look for the altars, painted pulpit and organ case from around 1800.

Visiting tips

The church is an active place of worship and a branch of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary parish. Regular interior opening hours are not confirmed, so ask the parish about access. Entry is free; a historic cemetery surrounds the church. Baborów fits into a longer tour of the Głubczyce region.
