Saint Michael Archangel and Assumption of Mary Basilica in Trzemeszno

The Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Trzemeszno is a late-Baroque gem on the Piast Trail. It is a former monastery church linked with the Canons Regular brought to Trzemeszno by Duke Bolesław the Wrymouth. The church preserves Romanesque and Gothic remains, while its dome dominates Kosmowski Square. Its Baroque interior and monastic history make it worth a stop.

Late Baroque design and Romanesque remains

The church follows a Latin-cross plan with a ring of chapels and a central octagon crowned by a dome inspired by St Peter’s Basilica in Rome. The western part preserves 12th-century Romanesque columns, the lower section of a tower and a stone tomb slab. The late-Baroque rebuilding in the 18th century was carried out under Abbot Michał Kosmowski.

Dome paintings and Saint Adalbert

The presbytery apse contains an Assumption of the Virgin by Franciszek Smuglewicz. The dome paintings show biblical scenes, while the nave murals refer to the cult of Saint Adalbert. The church burned in 1945; rebuilding lasted from 1948 to 1959. Beneath the basilica, visitors can see remains of a Romanesque crypt and a Gothic confession associated with Saint Adalbert.

Visiting the basilica in Trzemeszno

This is an active parish church, so plan entry outside Masses. The Archdiocese of Gniezno publishes the current service schedule.
