Market Square in Gniezno

Gniezno Market Square (Rynek, say "RIH-nek") is the heart of the old town in Gniezno, a small, friendly square lined with pastel townhouses, from which cobbled Tumska Street runs straight up to the cathedral on Lech Hill. Rebuilt after a great fire in 1819, it is less grand than the squares of Kraków or Wrocław but more relaxed – the place for coffee, lunch and the start of a self-guided walk following the bronze rabbits of the Royal Route.

Where it is

Gniezno (say "GNYEZ-no") lies in Greater Poland, about 55 km (34 miles) east of Poznań – under an hour by car or roughly 30 minutes on an intercity train. Warsaw is about 290 km away. From Gniezno station you can walk to the square in about 15 minutes. Gniezno is known as Poland's first capital: the country's first archbishopric was founded here in the year 1000, and five kings were crowned in the cathedral.

History in brief

Gniezno received its town charter in 1238–1239, and the square was laid out as the center of the new town. In the Middle Ages it was enclosed by walls; fragments survive on Farna Street, behind Holy Trinity Church. The great fire of 1819 destroyed most of the town; only two buildings on the square survived, and they were thoroughly restored in 1980. The townhouses you see today went up over the following two centuries, which explains the mix of Neoclassical, Art Nouveau and eclectic façades.

Things to see

• Red-brick outlines set into the paving that trace houses lost in the 1819 fire.
• A semicircle of coats of arms of towns belonging to the Union of Polish Cities.
• Tumska Street, with early-19th-century houses decorated with friezes, now full of cafés and restaurants – and a postcard view of the cathedral towers at the end.
• Bolesława Chrobrego Street, the main pedestrian street, with the Neoclassical Town Hall of 1830, today the civil registry office – expect wedding parties on weekends.
• Two historic churches: Gothic Holy Trinity (the old parish church) and the 13th-century Franciscan church.

The Royal Route

The square is a good start for the Royal Route (Trakt Królewski), a 2018 city trail with statues of the five kings crowned in Gniezno, monuments to two founding legends, bronze city models and 17 bronze rabbits acting as guides – the rabbit ("królik") was picked as a playful nod to "król," the Polish word for king. A free app called "Królika Goń" (Android and iOS) turns the walk into a game. The app's language options are not stated on the city website.

Is it worth visiting?

Combined with Lech Hill, yes – the square is where you will eat, rest and soak up small-town Polish life. Walk up Tumska Street to the cathedral and the 12th-century Gniezno Doors (paid sections open Monday–Saturday until 5 pm in October and until 4 pm from November; closed on Sundays).
