Gniezno, Greater Poland
The Archdiocesan Museum in Gniezno (Muzeum Archidiecezji Gnieźnieńskiej) holds the treasury of Gniezno Cathedral, one of the oldest and richest church collections in Poland. In a building just behind the cathedral on Lech Hill you can see Romanesque chalices, Gothic sculpture, Baroque coffin portraits and mementos of Poland's primates – a compact, rewarding stop on any Gniezno itinerary.
Gniezno (say "GNYEZ-no") lies about 55 km (34 miles) east of Poznań, under an hour by car or about half an hour by intercity train; Warsaw is roughly 290 km away. The museum is at ul. Kolegiaty 2, a two-minute walk from the cathedral and about 20 minutes on foot from the train station.
For centuries the cathedral treasury collected gifts from rulers, archbishops and pilgrims visiting the tomb of St. Adalbert, the missionary whose cult made Gniezno Poland's first archbishopric in the year 1000. Along with the treasuries of Wawel in Kraków and Jasna Góra in Częstochowa, it is counted among Poland's most important collections of Romanesque and Gothic church art. The museum was founded in 1989 and opened on May 22, 1991.
You will also find coffin portraits – a distinctive Polish Baroque custom of painting the deceased on metal plates fixed to the coffin – liturgical textiles, coins and medals, and a replica of the bronze Gniezno Doors.
The ticket desk in the museum building sells tickets for all paid sights on Lech Hill. The official sites do not state whether labels are in English, so expect mainly Polish texts.
Drivers can leave the car at the cathedral parking lot, entered from ul. Słomianka, a few steps from the museum. From the Market Square, walk up cobbled Tumska Street (about 300 meters). Once you are done, step next door to St. George's Church, see the bronze statue of Bolesław the Brave in front of the cathedral, or cross the park along Lake Jelonek to the Museum of the Origins of the Polish State, the archaeological counterpart to this collection.
Yes, especially if you are already seeing the cathedral. Plan 45–60 minutes. It is a good rainy-day option, and the combined pass makes it the obvious add-on to the Gniezno Doors and the crypts.
