Gniezno Cathedral on Lech Hill is one of the most important sites in Polish history and Christianity. The cathedral has been associated with the cult of St Adalbert for almost a thousand years, and its walls recall the Congress of Gniezno and the coronations of Poland’s first kings.

Main highlights

The present Gothic church dates from the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries and is the third church built on Lech Hill. The presbytery contains the silver sarcophagus with St Adalbert’s relics, while the famous Gniezno Door stands by the former entrance. Its 18th-century relief panels show the life and martyrdom of the patron saint. Also look for the ring of chapels, historic grilles, wall paintings and underground remains of earlier buildings.

Tickets and opening hours

Entry to the cathedral itself is free, while the Gniezno Door, vaults and viewing terrace require separate tickets; a combined pass with the museum is also available. Tourist services operate from 1 May to 31 October, Monday to Saturday, 09:00–17:00, and from 1 November to 30 April, 09:00–16:00. The ticket office closes 30 minutes earlier. There is no sightseeing during services, and on Sundays individual visitors can see only the cathedral itself.

Planning your visit

Allow about 90 minutes for the cathedral, Door and vaults; with the tower and museum, plan at least 2.5–3 hours. Arrive in the morning on a weekday, check the current prices and liturgical events, then combine the visit with a walk around Gniezno or the Museum of the Origins of the Polish State.
