Gniezno, Greater Poland
The Gniezno Roundhouse (Parowozownia Gniezno) is a historic steam locomotive depot next to the main railroad station in Gniezno, western Poland, and one of the largest surviving depot complexes in Europe. Two vast fan-shaped engine sheds, turntables, a brick water tower and more than twenty historic buildings make it a fascinating stop for rail fans, photographers and families looking for things to do in Gniezno beyond the cathedral.
Gniezno is about 55 km (around an hour by car) northeast of Poznań, which has the nearest international airport. Because the depot is right beside Gniezno station, the train is the easiest way to arrive: express trains from Poznań take roughly half an hour, regional trains a little longer. The entrance gate is at Składowa 1. The cathedral and the Museum of the Origins of the Polish State are a 20–25-minute walk away.
The railroad reached Gniezno in 1872, when Gniezno was part of the Prussian province of Posen, and the depot followed in 1875, with expansions in 1888, 1898 and 1905. Its busiest years came during World War II: after bombing in September 1939, the German occupiers repaired and enlarged it under the "Otto" program, which prepared rail infrastructure for the invasion of the Soviet Union. After the main lines were electrified in the 1970s, electric locomotives were serviced here too.
Activity wound down from the late 1980s. Locomotive repairs moved to Leszno in 2009, and the wagon shop closed in 2012. The complex was listed as a historic monument in 2009 and has been open to visitors since 2015, cared for by the volunteer-run Parowozownia Gniezno Association. It celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2025.

The website does not mention tours in English, so if you need one, ask the association in advance. There is no published accessibility information, and the site has rails and uneven ground.
For anyone interested in railroads or industrial heritage, absolutely – few places in Europe let you stand inside an original fan-shaped engine shed of this size. The association's flagship event, Steam Days (Dni Pary), has been held since 2010. Next door is the Gniezno Narrow Gauge Railway, which runs short tourist trips on summer weekends.
