The Austeria Inn in Sławków

The historic Austeria in Sławków is a wooden inn at Rynek 2 and one of the most valuable examples of old Polish small-town architecture. Its official historical name is “Austeria Miejska w Sławkowie Pierwochą Zwana”.

History and function

The present form of the building most likely dates from 1781, although the inn tradition is older. A document from 1787 lists the Austeria as a town inn. The word “austeria” once described a high-standard hostelry combining dining, accommodation and stables. Walls from the 13th century were found beneath the foundations, and excavations uncovered fragments of inn pottery.

What to see

Look for the wooden construction, the gabled roof and the preserved character of an old roadside inn. The Austeria forms part of the historic market-square frontage and the urban layout of Sławków. It is mainly a stop for people interested in wooden architecture, trade history and small towns, rather than a building with a large museum exhibition.

The Austeria stands at Rynek 2 in Sławków. Its exterior can be viewed without a ticket, but no fixed visiting hours or guaranteed interior access are confirmed. In 2026 the town was conducting procedures connected with work on the walls of the historic inn, so check the current construction status and any restrictions before travelling. Allow 15–20 minutes for a short exterior visit and combine it with a walk around Sławków’s market square and other historic buildings.
