Lakes
Jaworzno, Silesian
Where the excavators of the Szczakowa sand mine finished work in the 1960s, there is now water. Sosina Reservoir covers about 50 hectares and is surrounded by another 30 hectares of woodland and meadows. In summer it is the main beach for Jaworzno and the area; out of season it makes a quiet walk around the shore.
The lake lies in the Biskupi Bór basin, on a bed of glacial sands, clays and loams. Once extraction ended, the pit filled with water, and the shape of the bottom and shoreline turned out to suit swimming and water sports. The water is rated second class for purity. A small island in the middle has been set aside as a waterfowl reserve, so you cannot paddle everywhere.
The leisure centre on ul. Bukowska is run by the Municipal Centre for Culture and Sport. According to the town, about 250,000 people visited between May and the end of August 2026, and more than 38,000 car entries were recorded in June, July and August. The season passed without fatal incidents, and a new slipway for rescue boats was built on the shore.
On hot weekends the car park fills up quickly, so come early. For peace and quiet, choose a weekday or an off-season walk. Swim only in the marked zone while lifeguards are on duty, and never step onto the ice in winter. Allow two hours to half a day for the loop and some time on the beach. A few kilometres away is the Żabnik Valley nature reserve with its crystal-clear springs.
