Zielona Góra is the largest city in the Lubusz region, set on the slopes of the Zielona Góra Ridge near the Oder valley. It has been known for winegrowing since the Middle Ages, with the first record of vineyards dating from 1314. The tradition is still alive: in the first half of September the city celebrates Winobranie, its biggest festival, and the Lubusz Land Museum has an exhibition devoted to winemaking. Start on the Market Square with the town hall, then visit the co-cathedral of St Hedwig and the Church of Our Lady of Częstochowa, and with children head to the Botanical Garden with its fairy-tale farm. Outside the city, the Ethnographic Museum in Ochla displays historic village buildings, and Zatonie has palace ruins and a park. One to two days are enough. Arrive by train or via the S3 expressway. September, during Winobranie, is the best time, or any time from May to October.
