Church of Our Lady of Częstochowa in Zielona Góra

The Church of Our Lady of Częstochowa in Zielona Góra is a former Lutheran house of prayer built in 1746–1748 and now an active Catholic church. Its timber-and-masonry construction, cross-shaped plan and history linked with the rebuilding after the Silesian Wars reveal the city’s multi-faith past. It is an interesting stop in central Zielona Góra.

A church built with old fortification material

The church was erected after Protestants regained freedom of worship. Bricks and stones from dismantled town fortifications were used in its construction, giving the story a tangible dimension. The church originally had no tower; the present one was added in stages and completed in 1828.

Clock and furnishings

In 1929 the tower received a clock made in Berlin. The chancel retains a wooden altar from 1748, with a 1995 image of Our Lady of Częstochowa at its centre. After 1945 the former Lutheran church passed to a Catholic parish; since 1987 it has served under its present dedication.

The church stands at 1 Kasprowicza Street, a few minutes from the promenade and the Cathedral of St Hedwig. It is an active parish, so see the interior outside services. The parish lists Masses at 07:00, 10:00 and 18:00 on weekdays, and at 07:30, 09:30, 11:00, 12:30 and 17:00 on Sundays; check the current schedule before travelling. Allow 20–30 minutes.
