Zielona Góra, Lubusz
The open-air museum in Ochla (pronounced roughly "OH-khlah"), officially the Ethnographic Museum in Zielona Góra, is a large skansen on the southern edge of the city: nearly 80 historic village buildings spread over about 13 hectares in the south of the city. You can see wooden cottages from four regions, the oldest house dated 1675 and an 18th-century wine tower. If you are looking for things to do around Zielona Góra, it is a good family day out.
A skansen is an open-air museum of rural buildings moved from villages and rebuilt to show everyday life. Ochla was founded in 1982 on the site of the Zielona Góra Ethnographic Park, and its roots go back to 1960, when the Lubusz Land Museum set up an ethnography department. The collection comes from four regions: western Greater Poland, eastern Lusatia, Lower Silesia and the central Lubusz area. According to the museum, it holds more than 10,000 artefacts, partly on display and partly in storage.
The oldest surviving house comes from Potrzebowo and is dated 1675. The wine tower from Budachów (18th century) fits the region's wine culture. You walk past cottages, such as the one from Korbielewo dated 1803, and barns, cowsheds and stables from different villages. There is also a cottage from Bukovina, linked to people resettled after World War II, a stone farmstead and a restored Baroque manor. Giant barrels stand near the winery area, and a tavern operates on site. There is also a spot by the pond for bonfires and grilling, available by prior reservation.
Plan two to three hours for the grounds, or half a day with a stop at the tavern. The site is large, so wear comfortable shoes. Tickets can be bought online. The Baroque Manor is a separate site at ul. Ochla-Górna 4 and is sometimes closed, for example on 15 August and 10 October 2026.
The museum is about 7 to 8 km from the centre of Zielona Góra. City bus 27 from the main station (Dworzec Główny) goes to the stop Ochla Skansen. If you drive, check the museum's website for parking. Information in English is not confirmed on the site.
Yes, especially for families and anyone interested in rural architecture. It is not a headline sight like Auschwitz or Wawel, but it is a quiet, green place with real historic buildings, in the middle of Poland's wine-growing region.
