Rabsztyn Castle

Rabsztyn Castle is a picturesque ruin on a limestone hill near Olkusz, part of Poland’s Eagles’ Nests Trail. Today visitors can climb the lookout tower, cross bridges over the moat and visit Kocjan Cottage at the foot of the hill.

History

The castle dates back to the second half of the 13th century, when an upper castle with a defensive tower was built on the rock. In the 14th century, a middle castle with a courtyard and gate was developed below it. In the 16th century, Rabsztyn belonged to the Boner family, who remodelled it in the Renaissance style. The stronghold was burned in 1657 by retreating Swedish troops and later abandoned. Between 2012 and 2014, parts of the upper castle walls and tower were reconstructed, creating the present lookout terrace.

What to see

The tower offers views over the area around Olkusz. Along the route you can see the reconstructed gate, wooden bridges, moat remains and the walls of the Renaissance palace. At the foot of the hill stands Kocjan Cottage, a reconstructed wooden house where aircraft designer Antoni Kocjan was born in 1902. The displays cover his work and the local history of the house.

Practical information

The castle is at Rabsztyn 24, 32-300 Olkusz. It opens seasonally, with hours and prices varying by month; last entry is 30 minutes before closing. The operator lists January, February and December as closed. The tower is reached by steep stairs, so plan the visit with your own mobility in mind.
