Basilica of Saint Andrew in Olkusz

St. Andrew's Basilica in Olkusz (say "OL-koosh") is the Gothic parish church of Poland's old "Silver Town," standing at the corner of the Market Square about 40 km (25 miles) northwest of Kraków. Two treasures make it worth a detour: the late-Gothic Olkusz Polyptych altarpiece and an early 17th-century organ by Hans Hummel, one of the oldest in Europe to survive close to its original state. The church also tells the story of the silver and lead miners who paid for much of its art.

A miners' church

A parish here is recorded as early as 1184, and St. Andrew's Church is first mentioned in 1317. The present Gothic church dates from the first half of the 14th century, traditionally funded by King Casimir the Great. It is a three-aisled hall church, often compared with churches in Levoča in Slovakia. Mining under the town damaged it in the 17th century, and the bell tower burned in 1864; the current neo-Gothic tower was built in 1903–1913. The church became a minor basilica in 2002.

Things to see inside

• The Olkusz Polyptych: a Gothic altarpiece attributed to the Kraków painters Jan Wielki and Stanisław Stary, with 16 painted panels of the lives of Mary and Christ around a carved Madonna and Child from about 1480. Sources differ on the date of the altarpiece: 1451 or 1485.
• Hans Hummel's organ: commissioned by local miners in 1611 from the Nuremberg-born organ builder based in Kraków. After Hummel's death in 1630, his pupil Jerzy Nitrowski completed it in 1631. Its original mechanism and most of its 1,776 pipes survive.
• Mining heritage: a 16th-century baptismal font cast from Olkusz lead and the 17th-century silver Miners' Cross in St. Anne's Chapel.
• Amenda (Loreto) Chapel: a Mannerist chapel from 1620 funded by the local miner Stanisław Amenda.

Visiting hours and tips (as of October 2026)

According to a May 2026 notice from Olkusz Town Hall, the parish opens the basilica to visitors on Tuesdays 10:00 am–12:00 pm, Thursdays 4:00–6:00 pm and Saturdays 10:00 am–12:00 pm, using the side entrance by St. John Cantius Chapel. There is no guide and no sightseeing during services; other times are possible by prior arrangement. Admission is not mentioned, so bring a few złoty (PLN) for a donation. Information is in Polish, so a translation app helps. Allow 30–45 minutes.

Organ fans should look out for the annual International Olkusz Days of Organ and Chamber Music each October.

How to get to Olkusz

Olkusz is about 45 minutes by car from Kraków or Katowice, and buses run from both cities. The church is at Szpitalna 1, next to the Market Square; park in the town center.
