Rybnik Reservoir

In the north-western part of Rybnik spreads the Rybnik reservoir, known as the Rybnik Sea — a seven-kilometre-long reservoir on the Ruda river, created for the Rybnik Power Plant. The plant turned out to be an unexpected blessing for the water: its installations warm it up, so it rarely freezes and recreation here goes on almost all year round.

The longest sailing season in Poland

The warmer water stretches the sailing season to the limit: it runs from April to October — longer than anywhere else in Poland — and the water temperature does not drop below 15°C. Since the lake does not freeze even in winter, regattas in fact take place here all year round. Sailing clubs, a scouting marina and a riding centre operate on the banks; there is a campsite, a children's playground and a boat rental.

Embankments, a pier and mass on the water

A walking and cycling path lined with benches runs along the reservoir, surrounded by shrubs and trees. On the power plant side, by Podmiejska Street, stands a recreational pier. In summer a mass is celebrated on the water — one of the more unusual events in the town's calendar. The view of the power plant chimneys rising above the water has become part of the local landscape and gives the place its distinctive character.

Practical information

Entry to the reservoir is free and the area is available around the clock, all year round. The main entrances are from Rudzka and Podmiejska streets in Rybnik; in summer it is worth arriving early, as the spots by the water fill up quickly.
