Cyster Oak in Rudy

The Cyster Oak grows behind the basilica in Rudy, near Racibórz. It is a protected natural monument in the monastic park. According to the Old Abbey, dendrological studies estimate it at about 520 years old, with a height of around 31 m and a trunk circumference of 740 cm, measured at 130 cm above ground. The hollow lower trunk is a natural feature of an ancient tree — do not enter or put weight on it.

The oak and Rudy’s history

“Cyster” is the oldest resident of the park and a living reference point for the history of the former abbey. Its impressive size was noted as early as the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The tree stands beside the historic monastery-palace complex, basilica and extensive park, so it is best treated as part of a wider Rudy itinerary rather than a stand-alone stop lasting only a few minutes.

Descendants and the Avenue of Papal Oaks

Saplings were grown from the oak’s acorns and distributed to municipalities along the Cistercian Trail. The Avenue of Papal Oaks is another point worth adding to a park walk. If you want to buy a sapling, check its current availability and sales hours at the Old Abbey, as the offer is seasonal.

Planning your visit

The oak stands behind the monastery in Rudy and can be viewed from outside; access depends on the abbey’s rules. There is no separate ticket or fixed schedule, so check current information before travelling. The trunk was set on fire in 2022: do not light fires, touch the tree or enter its hollow. Combine the visit with the basilica, monastery, park and Avenue of Papal Oaks.
