Warsaw Railway Museum

On the grounds of the former Warszawa Główna station on Towarowa Street operates the Stacja Muzeum — an open-air collection of historic locomotives, wagons and railway salon cars. The institution was established in 2015 jointly by the Masovian Voivodeship and Polish State Railways (PKP), and officially opened during the Night of Museums on 14 May 2016, after taking over the collections of the closed Railway Museum.

Exhibits you will not see anywhere else

The Ashx 01 salon wagon, used by President Bolesław Bierut between 1947 and 1952, is one of the most valuable objects in the collection. Next to it stands an armoured train — the PzTrWg16 armoured locomotive with an artillery wagon — and the world's only surviving Pm3 streamlined steam locomotive. The collection is complemented by maps, models, uniforms, clocks and lamps documenting everyday life of the Polish railway.

A museum by the live track

The open-air exhibition sits amid working railway infrastructure — you walk among rails and platforms. In 2019, in connection with the reconstruction of the Warszawa Główna station, 40 historic vehicles were transferred to tracks closer to the museum building. The place can feel raw — some of the rolling stock awaits restoration — but that is precisely what makes it a faithful portrait of the railway world.

The branch and the narrow-gauge line

Under the institution's wing operates the Narrow-Gauge Railway Museum in Sochaczew with 170 units of narrow-gauge rolling stock. There you will find the oldest surviving steam locomotive in Poland, dating from 1882, while in summer weekends the historic Px29-1704 from 1929 departs with carriages on an 18-kilometre route towards the Kampinos Forest.
