The Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw (Muzeum Sztuki Nowoczesnej, known as MSN) is the newest of the city's major cultural institutions. Since October 2024 it has occupied a striking white building at Marszałkowska 103, right beside the Palace of Culture and Science. Inside are collection displays and temporary exhibitions of contemporary art from Poland and around the world, a cinema, and a dramatic stair hall that has quickly become one of the most photographed interiors in Warsaw.
MSN stands on Defilad Square in the very center of Warsaw, a short walk from Warszawa Centralna station and about 10 km from Warsaw Chopin Airport. Its minimalist white box sits in deliberate contrast to the Stalinist Palace of Culture next door, a gift from the Soviet Union in the 1950s.
The museum was established on April 29, 2005, but for almost two decades it had no permanent home. It used a temporary venue on Pańska Street from 2008 to 2017, then a riverside pavilion, the "Museum on the Vistula," from 2017. A 2007 design competition was won by Christian Kerez, but that contract was terminated in 2012. The final design came from New York firm Thomas Phifer and Partners (with APA Wojciechowski Architekci), and the building opened on October 25, 2024.
It offers about 19,800 m² of usable space, including roughly 4,500 m² for exhibitions. Its signature is a suspended facade of white architectural concrete, colored throughout, a first in Poland. Joanna Mytkowska has directed the museum since 2007.
Allow 1.5–2 hours for the exhibitions, or half a day with a film. Coming after 6 pm saves money, and on Fridays the museum stays open until 8 pm. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult. The website has accessibility information and content in Polish Sign Language.
MSN also runs the Bródno Sculpture Park, the Zofia and Oskar Hansen House in Szumin and a dance pavilion on the Vistula riverside.
Hours (from July 1, 2026):
Last entry is 30 minutes before closing. The museum is closed on October 15, November 1 and 11, and December 24–25, 2026, and open 11 am–5 pm on December 31.
Exhibition tickets:
Yes, if you're interested in contemporary art or architecture. Even on a short city break, the stair hall is worth a look, and evening tickets make it an easy winter option when it gets dark early. The building divides opinion, some admire its restraint while others find it too plain, which is all the more reason to see it for yourself.
MSN is a few minutes' walk from Centrum (M1) and Świętokrzyska (M1/M2) metro stations and from Warszawa Centralna railway station. Many trams and buses stop on Marszałkowska Street. Downtown parking is limited and paid, so leave the car behind.
