The granaries of Grudziądz form one of the most distinctive historic complexes on the lower Vistula. The brick buildings stand on the escarpment between the Castle Hill and the Water Gate, creating the city’s best-known river panorama. The 26-building complex recalls the city’s trading past. In 2017, the granaries were awarded the status of a Historic Monument.

History of the complex

The first granaries probably existed before the mid-14th century. By 1504, sources already mentioned 14 brick buildings,. After fires in the second half of the 17th century, the complex was rebuilt and adapted. Some buildings retained their storage function; others were converted into homes in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

What to see

The best views are from the riverfront and the opposite bank, but it is also worth walking along the upper line of the granaries towards the Water Gate. Selected buildings house branches of the Rev. Dr Władysław Łęga Museum. The Vistula Trade Museum at 33–35 Spichrzowa Street explores shipping, trade and the river’s importance to the city.

Before your visit

You can see the complex from outside during a walk through the old town; opening hours apply to the museum interiors. In 2026, the Vistula Trade Museum at 33–35 Spichrzowa Street is open Tuesday to Friday from 10:00 to 16:00 and Saturday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00; from October to April it is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 16:00. It is closed on Mondays. Check holiday exceptions and current exhibition access before travelling.
