Town Walls in Chełmno

The town walls of Chełmno (say "HELM-no") are among the best-preserved medieval fortifications in Poland: almost 1.7 km (about a mile) of red-brick walls and 23 towers still ring nearly the whole Gothic old town. Together with the old town layout they form a national Monument of History, and walking along them, with views over the Vistula valley, is the best way to grasp how important this hilltop town once was. The walls are free to visit at any time.

Where it is and how to get there

Chełmno sits on an escarpment above the Vistula in northern Poland, about 45 km (28 miles) north of Toruń and roughly 150 km south of Gdańsk, close to the A1 motorway. Bydgoszcz Airport is the nearest airport (about 50 km). A car is the easiest option; park at the edge of the old town and explore on foot.

A short history

Construction of the brick walls began in the second half of the 13th century, when Chełmno was one of the leading towns of the Teutonic Knights' state, and was finished in the 14th century. In 1563, with the consent of King Sigismund Augustus, the walls were raised by bricking up the battlements. Seven gates once led into town; in 1860–1870, to ease traffic, two short stretches of wall and five gates were pulled down and the moat was partly filled in. A renovation in 2014–2015 added lighting, a walking path and two towers opened as viewpoints.

What to see

• Grudziądz Gate — a 13th-century gate, once the main entrance and town jail. In the 17th century a chapel linked to the cult of Our Lady of Chełmno was built on top (the town dates it to around 1620, other sources to 1694), which saved the gate from demolition.
• Merseburg Gate — the other surviving gate, by the former convent.
• Powder Tower — home to the archaeology department of the Chełmno Land Museum.
• Maiden Tower on 3 Maja Avenue — base of the local knights' re-enactment brotherhood; visits only by prior arrangement.
• Mestwin and Dominican towers, plus the sturdy brick buttresses added from the late 19th century.

When to go

The walls look their best in the late afternoon and after dark, when the lighting installed in 2014–2015 comes on. Chełmno also markets itself as Poland's "town of lovers": relics of St. Valentine are kept in the parish church, and the town gets busy around February 14. Families with kids usually enjoy the towers and gates, and photographers will find plenty of brick-and-sky angles.

How to visit and is it worth it?

You cannot follow the wall around its entire length, as gardens and the cemetery block some sections, but Podmurna Street, 3 Maja Avenue and the green ring of the Planty cover most of it. Allow 1–1.5 hours. Paths are mostly paved and stroller-friendly, with some steps near the escarpment. Entry is free (as of October 2026); viewpoint towers and the Grudziądz Gate may have their own access times, so ask at the tourist office on the Market Square. If you are visiting Toruń, Chełmno makes an excellent, uncrowded half-day trip — combine the walls with the Renaissance town hall and the Gothic parish church.
