Lake Chełmżyńskie

Lake Chełmżyńskie reaches into the centre of Chełmża and is one of the town’s main attractions. This glacial channel lake covers about 299 hectares and offers a promenade, beaches and views of the Gothic co-cathedral. It is easy to combine a quiet walk, time by the water and sightseeing in Chełmża.

Walking and recreation

The Municipal Beach operates near the centre on Łazienna Street. OSiT lists a pier, catering, toilets, an unsupervised car park, outdoor gym, small playground, barbecue area and water-equipment rental. Other unsupervised beaches and a walking footbridge can be found around the lake, including by Bulwar 1000-lecia.

Bathing season

The bathing area is seasonal, and dates and hours may change each year. For 2026, the GIS bathing service lists 20 June–30 August, 10:00–18:00. Check current water-quality notices and city announcements before swimming; outside the designated bathing area, do not assume that the shore is supervised.

A good day plan

Start with the promenade and co-cathedral in Chełmża, then choose a beach or a quieter stretch of shore. Local clubs and rentals operate on the water, but equipment availability is seasonal. If you are travelling with children or planning to swim, check facilities, regulations and access before leaving. Chełmża also works well as a day trip from Toruń.
