Lake Chełmża

The lake gave the town its name: in 1251 the settlement on its shore was called Culmsee in German, meaning "Chełmno Lake". Lake Chełmża, the largest in Toruń County, reaches as a narrow channel right into the centre of Chełmża, with a Gothic co-cathedral rising above its shore. It is a good spot for a promenade stroll, a swim in season and a quiet day by the water within easy reach of Toruń.

A glacial channel lake

This is a classic tunnel-valley lake, carved by glacial meltwater: about 6.1 km long, just 200–550 m wide and around 2.7 km² in area. It reaches a depth of 27 m. The lake lies in the Chełmno Lake District in the Fryba river basin and connects with neighbouring Lake Grzywno; between them, on a hill jutting into the water, lies the village of Strużal. The lake used to be larger and once surrounded the hill where St Nicholas' Church stands today.

Town beach and bathing area

The lifeguarded bathing area is on ul. Łazienna, close to the centre. The beach is about 50 m long, with a jetty around the swimming area, food outlets, toilets, parking, an outdoor gym, a small playground, an amphitheatre, a barbecue spot and water-sports hire. The town's sports and leisure centre gives the season as roughly 15 June to 30 August, 10:00–18:00, while the official bathing-water service listed 20 June – 30 August for 2026. The bottom is sandy and muddy, and the water is rated quality class II; check the current water-quality notice before swimming.

On the water and along the shore

Two clubs are based on the lake, the Chełmża Rowing Society and KST Włókniarz with canoeing and sailing sections, and an equipment hire point stands on the shore opposite the co-cathedral. In the eastern part, at Zalesie, there is a municipal beach with sports pitches, parking and two campsites. On the southern shore lies Mirakowo with its holiday cottages. Anglers fish here all year round for pike, zander, perch, bream and lake trout, among others.

Tripto tip

Start at the co-cathedral, then walk down to the promenade: from the shore you get the best view of the brick church and its tower above the water, especially in afternoon light. If you want to sail, come in spring or autumn, as in summer there can be weeks without wind. Outside the designated bathing area there are no lifeguards. Two hours are enough for a walk and a rest, and from Toruń it makes an easy half-day trip.
