Museum of the Mazovian Countryside in Sierpc

By the Sierpienica river, just before its confluence with the Skrwa, stretch 60 hectares of the Museum of the Mazovian Countryside — one of the largest open-air museums in Poland. More than 80 buildings of timber construction from the second half of the 19th and early 20th century recreate a Mazovian village with its characteristic single-street layout, the rzędówka.

Since 1971

The museum was founded on 24 March 1971 as a regional ethnographic institution, and the Ethnographic Park was established in 1975 on the grounds of the Bojanowo manor remnant. The first buildings arrived in 1977–1978, and the present name was given in 1987. Today visitors see the reconstructed manor house from Uniszki Zawadzkie and 11 peasant homesteads — cottages, barns, cowsheds, granaries and pigsties — as well as an inn, a smithy, an oil mill, a windmill and a wooden church.

A film village and blue cottages

Several homesteads went into film history: in the mid-19th-century homestead from Rzeszotary-Zawady, owned by a well-to-do farmer, „Pan Tadeusz" was shot (the model of the Rozogi manor was burned for the footage), and the museum also hosted the crews of „Szwadron", „With Fire and Sword" and the series „Stulecie Winnych". The homesteads from Czermin and Izdebna stand out with blue walls: painted with ultramarine, a pigment that was more expensive than gold before the invention of the synthetic dye in the early 19th century.

Practical information

The museum is at ul. Narutowicza 64 in Sierpc, about 3 km from the railway station. Admission is free on Mondays (interiors closed), and on Sundays from May to September craftsmen work by the 19th-century post windmill from Zalesie: a blacksmith, weaver, embroiderer, sculptor and basket maker. The 18th-century Pohulanka inn serves regional cuisine daily except Mondays.
